Twitter/X sees sharp decline in usage since last year according to new study

X, formerly known as Twitter, has seen a sharp decline in usage over the last year according to a sneak peak from the 2024 Infinite Dial study conducted by Edison research.

The Infinite Dial is a methodologically rigorous study of the US population, tracking key measures in online and broadcast audio, podcasting, social media, and more.

  • Both the 2022 and 2023 Infinite Dial studies showed that 27% of the total population in the US reported using Twitter.
  • In the 2024 study, only 19% of the total population in the US reported using “X (formerly known as Twitter).”

The 30% decline in usage comes after billionaire Elon Musk took control over Twitter in a highly-publicized $44 billion acquisition in Fall of 2022 and rebranded the website as X in April of last year.
